In late 2026, Kosovo’s economy showed a mix of import dependency, inflationary pressure, and business growth. Data from the first three quarters of the year indicated a heavy reliance on foreign wheat imports, with approximately 11,433 tons valued at 5.383 million euros imported between January and September. While the country sought to expand its export footprint through participation in international food industry fairs, domestic production gaps remained evident. By September 2026, the annual inflation rate reached 7.8 percent, driven by rising costs in energy, housing, and transport. Geopolitical factors have also impacted oil derivative prices. In response to these pressures, Lulzim Rafuna of the Kosovo Chamber of Commerce called for government interventions, such as reducing VAT or excise duties on fuel, to assist citizens and businesses. Economist Bashkim Mustafa noted that the local economy remains vulnerable to international price fluctuations due to a high dependence on imports. Within the agricultural sector, the Kosovo Agency of Statistics (ASK) reported that production prices rose by 1.4 percent in the third quarter of 2026 compared to the previous year. This includes a 3.1 percent increase in livestock products, covering categories such as cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, milk, eggs, and honey, alongside a 0.8 percent rise in plant production, which includes cereals, vegetables, potatoes, and fruit. In cities like Mitrovica, residents, particularly pensioners and low-income families, have reported difficulties managing daily expenses as wages and pensions fail to keep pace with rising costs. Despite inflationary challenges, business activity remains active. While September saw 1,259 new enterprise registrations, a 24.5 percent monthly increase, the digital economy is also evolving. The Central Bank of Kosovo reported that interbank electronic transactions exceeded 27 billion euros in 2025. To address informality following a wave of 81 new online business registrations, the Ministry of Industry, Entrepreneurship, and Trade announced increased inspections of online businesses beginning November 1.
