By early September 2026, the rift between Kosovo’s central and local governments deepened. Municipal leaders from the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), the Lidhja Demokratike e Kosovës (LDK), and Aleanca have accused Albin Kurti’s administration of undermining local competencies and blocking essential funds for municipal projects. Political analyst Bekim Salihu of the GAP Institute noted that municipalities face a risk of ‘functional bankruptcy’ due to significant financial burdens. A primary driver is over 300 million euros in obligations stemming from central-level collective contracts in education and healthcare, which have left municipalities responsible for the resulting costs. While Salihu suggested that 95 percent of these financial issues were inherited from previous administrations, he criticized the current government for failing to address them through neglect or a lack of interest. Simultaneously, ~~opposition deputies, including Enver Hoxhaj~~ the process of electing a president has become a point of contention. Although Bekim Sejdiu was proposed as a consensus candidate following discussions between Albin Kurti and Lumir Abdixhiku, the ~~PDK, criticized~~ agreement has faced opposition from the PDK and several LDK deputies. Opposition parties have also escalated their rhetoric, with Aleanca launching symbolic protests against the Vetëvendosje government. They allege the ruling party operates under an ‘iron fist’ regime where deputies lack freedom of expression and are strictly controlled by leadership. Furthermore, PDK representatives continue to criticize the administration for a lack of internal political ~~stability.
