Kosovo-Serbian judicial and social tensions

Overview

The Kosovo Judicial Council (KGJK) has officially rejected requests from Serbian judges and administrative staff to rescind their 2022 resignations and return to their positions. Acting President Albulena Haxhiu welcomed the proposal to relieve these individuals of their duties, but the European Union expressed deep concern, stating the decision appears “incompatible with Kosovo law, the regular legal process, and the requirements for the rule of law.” The OSCE also warned that Pristina must ensure Serbian participation in judicial institutions.

Concurrently, the Serbian community in Kosovo continues to face social and political pressure. In Uroševac, residents report living under constant scrutiny and isolation. Tensions remain high regarding upcoming legal verdicts from The Hague, leaving the Serbian population in a state of uncertainty and fear regarding potential consequences and the security situation in northern Kosovo.
