Prime Minister Albin Kurti has announced a state strategy to respond to a first-instance verdict from the Specialized Chambers in The Hague. The court sentenced former KLA leaders Hashim Thaçi, Jakup Krasniqi, Kadri Veseli, and Rexhep Selimi to a combined 81 years in prison. Kurti characterized the verdict as “legally, morally, and historically inaccurate,” pledging government support for defense teams during the appeal and intending to utilize diplomatic channels to challenge the decision. In ongoing efforts to identify victims of the 1998-1999 war, DNA analysis by the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) has confirmed the identities of three individuals recovered from mass graves in the Kalludër and Jabukë sites in Zubin Potok. These victims were members of the ‘Intellectual Group’ kidnapped by Serbian forces in April 1999. Recent excavations in the area have uncovered remains belonging to at least 23 individuals. Among those identified is Idriz Rrecaj, a political activist and decorated ‘Hero of Kosovo’. His family confirmed his identification following DNA analysis from a laboratory in The Hague, ending 27 years of uncertainty regarding his whereabouts. Rrecaj was part of the group of 23 Albanian individuals abducted on April 19, 1999. To assist in locating the 1,577 persons still listed as missing, Kurti has called on the US, EU, and UK to pressure Serbia to open its military archives.
