The Municipality of Kozani has initiated several urban development and environmental projects. Initially, the municipality secured €965,000 in funding from the Green Fund’s ‘Environmental Balance Actions’ program for the redevelopment of Logiou Park. Mayor Giannis Kokkaliaris noted the project aims to restore the space using modern bioclimatic materials to create an “environmental lung within the urban fabric.” Following this, the Kozani Municipal Committee approved a separate €297,042 project to upgrade lighting in parks, playgrounds, and public green spaces. This initiative, part of the Special Program for Just Transition, involves replacing outdated fixtures with LED technology and installing new aluminum poles to improve energy efficiency and citizen safety. By October 2026, the municipality reported further infrastructure progress, including road paving in the communities of Koilada, Drepanou, and Avgi Kapnochori to enhance mobility and safety. The park lighting upgrade project has since entered the tendering phase. Concurrently, Panagiotis Matiakis, Chairman of the Board of DEYAK, addressed technical challenges within the district heating network. He noted that the transition in thermal energy production resulting from the lignite phase-out has introduced new technical issues. Matiakis stated that while the system is extensive and aging, the utility is working to resolve damages caused by these technical shifts and third-party works, such as fiber optic installations.
