Krasheninnikov volcano eruption in Kamchatka

Overview

The Krasheninnikov volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula has entered an eruptive phase after approximately 475 to 500 years of dormancy. The eruption followed a magnitude 8.8 earthquake that occurred in late July 2025.

Scientific analysis suggests the seismic activity may have influenced magma movement or facilitated gas bubble formation, increasing internal pressure. Satellite data and radar imagery from the NISAR mission have tracked the eruption's evolution, showing lava spreading from the northern crater, filling an internal caldera, and eventually overflowing into a wider crater in a fan shape. Observations indicate that approximately 32 million cubic meters of magma rose from a reservoir located six kilometers deep.
