The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Rojava administration have completed the integration of their military, security, and administrative institutions into the Syrian state structures. This process follows a January 2026 agreement mediated by the United States and France with the transitional government led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa. As part of this transition, tens of thousands of SDF personnel are being absorbed into Syrian government ministries. To facilitate the move, President al-Sharaa issued a decree recognizing Kurdish as a national language, establishing Nowruz as a national holiday, and enshrining Kurdish national rights. While the administrative merger is finished, the practical implementation of field-level arrangements remains an ongoing process. Political discussions continue regarding the formal recognition of Kurdish rights within the new Syrian Constitution. Following a meeting with President al-Sharaa, SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi announced the formal dissolution of the SDF and its full merger into the state framework. ~~During~~ In a ~~press conference at~~ televised address from the ~~People’s Palace~~ presidential palace in Damascus, Abdi stated that the SDF, which serves as the Syrian face of the YPG, has completed its mission and will transition from military combat to national reconstruction. While the SDF is being dissolved, certain military structures will be maintained as regional brigades in areas such as Qamishli, Derik, and Kobani. Abdi reported that the integration process is expected to be completed within the month. Regarding regional stability, Abdi noted that relations with Turkey have improved, stating that “open channels of dialogue exist between the two parties” and that they are communicating directly. He expressed hope for moving toward mutual understanding and normal diplomatic relations, noting that political conditions would determine the possibility of a visit to Turkey.
