KVC Westerlo entered the 2026 Belgian Pro League season in a rebuilding phase following the sale of half its squad for €26 million during the summer. The club concluded its pre-season preparations with a 1-2 friendly loss to the Turkish side Samsunspor, a result which coach Issame Charaï attributed to a lack of midfield creativity and aerial strength. In their league opener, Westerlo initially took an early lead in the 13th minute through Norman Bassette. However, the team ultimately suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, who responded with five unanswered goals. Canadian striker Promise David contributed an equalizer and an assist, while Relebohile Mofokeng scored shortly after entering the match. Darius Olaru also added a long-range strike to the scoreline. During this period, the team also strengthened its roster by completing the permanent transfer of midfielder Cisse Sandra from Club Brugge.
