A political and fiscal dispute has emerged in Chile’s La Araucanía region involving Governor René Saffirio and the Regional Council (CORE). The conflict began when Saffirio accused the council of manipulating the allocation of approximately 10 billion pesos from the 8% FNDR fund to favor specific organizations by bypassing projects with higher technical scores. The 20 regional councilors unanimously rejected these claims, demanding a public apology, which resulted in a stall of resource distribution for social organizations across 32 communes. Following this dispute, the region faces further fiscal challenges, as the challenges. The 2027 regional budget includes a 22% cut cut, a development that has drawn criticism from Governor Saffirio.
