La Familia Michoacana kidnappings in Guerrero
Overview
The criminal organization La Familia Michoacana has been implicated in a series of kidnappings across the Guerrero region, specifically affecting areas such as Ajuchitlán del Progreso, Taxco, and the Sierra region.
Following the kidnapping of eight residents from Ejido El Balcón on September 24, federal and local authorities conducted a joint operation that successfully rescued six victims. However, one individual, farmer Domingo Atanacio Quirino, remains missing. His child released a video pleading for his release, noting that the man is currently ill.
Human rights advocates and families report that the scale of captivity may be much larger than initially known. Testimonies from released captives suggest that as many as 136 people may be held by the group. Survivors indicate that victims are frequently moved between locations, including the Tierra Caliente region and the State of Mexico, to evade security forces. Activists have expressed concern that the group is attempting to establish a base in El Balcón by kidnapping residents who resist their presence.
