La Mojana ancient hydraulic system research

Research published in Communications Sustainability regarding the ancient hydraulic landscape of La Mojana in Colombia’s Caribbean wetlands suggests that the massive system was constructed through community cooperation rather than centralized command. The network, which covers approximately 500,000 hectares, consists of canals and raised earthen ridges designed to manage floods and droughts.

Archaeologists from the University of Cambridge, the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History (ICANH), and the University of Santiago de Compostela utilized satellite imagery and soil analysis to challenge the assumption that such large-scale engineering required hierarchical chiefdoms. Researchers estimated that a local workforce of roughly 800 people could have completed the system using horizontal cooperation among family groups without metal tools.

The system functioned as a natural regulator, absorbing excess water during heavy rainfall and distributing it during droughts to enrich soil and support fishing. Experts suggest this pre-Columbian approach to working with nature offers valuable lessons for modern water management and climate change adaptation.
