In the La Plata region of Argentina, the transport sector is undergoing significant regulatory and economic shifts. Following earlier tensions regarding competition, the Unión Conductores de Taxis de La Plata, led by Juan Carlos Berón, has introduced two legislative projects aimed at reforming the industry. These initiatives seek to regulate the rental of taxi vehicles to prevent what the union describes as “abuse by owners,” noting that approximately 60 percent of local taxis currently operate under unregulated rental schemes. The union is also proposing an explicit ban on digital transport applications. Concurrently, the Province of Buenos Aires has announced increases in public bus fares for the Greater La Plata area, including Berisso and Ensenada, effective October. These adjustments are based on a monthly mechanism established by the provincial Ministry of Transport that accounts for fuel price variations, the Consumer Price Index, and an additional 2 percent charge. In the Gran La Plata region specifically, bus fares are set to see a 3.6% increase, with the minimum fare for trips up to 3 kilometers rising to $1,323.33. Broadening the scope of these economic adjustments, Argentina is implementing a wave of cost-of-living increases starting October 1. In the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA), public transport fares are rising by approximately 3.7%, while bus rates in Gran Buenos Aires will increase by approximately 4.35%. Nationwide, rental contracts governed by the former Rental Law will see updates of up to 36.41%. To mitigate inflationary pressure, the national government has issued Decree 1126/2026, postponing updates to liquid fuel and carbon dioxide taxes until November 1. Analysts from Grupo Geres noted that if these pending taxes had been applied in October, super gasoline prices would have risen by 11.2% and diesel grade 3 by 4.3%.
