Laftagareen forces conflict in Somalia's Bay region

Overview

Forces loyal to former South West State President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen have launched a military campaign against Somali federal and regional administration forces in the Bay region.

On October 15, Laftagareen-aligned fighters seized the strategic town of Buurhakaba following heavy fighting. The takeover, which targeted positions held by federal troops, resulted in the reported capture of federal soldiers. A spokesperson for the former president stated the Dervish forces entered the district to “restore law and order.”

By October 17, the momentum of the counter-offensive expanded, with Laftagareen’s forces capturing several additional strategic districts, including Qansahdheere, Berdaale, Diinsoor, and Awdiinle. As a result of these advances, Baidoa remains the only major town in the region still under federal government control. While the current administration disputes the motives of the movement, Laftagareen’s office maintains that the operations aim to “restore security, restore stability, and uphold law and order.”
