Lagos food safety and public health concerns

Overview

Food safety and public health concerns have intensified in Lagos, driven by improper processing methods and unhygienic trading environments.

Initial reports highlighted consumer distrust regarding the preparation of fufu, citing the use of detergents and poor preservation techniques. In response, the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) warned against using corroded cast-iron grinding machines to prevent metal contamination, urging a transition to food-grade stainless steel.

As the situation progressed, the focus expanded to include the risks posed by illegal street trading in areas such as Oshodi, Obalende, and Oyingbo. The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) noted that unauthorized traders are obstructing infrastructure and contributing to indiscriminate waste disposal. These traders often operate in environments where raw meat is exposed to dust, flies, and heat on wooden slabs, frequently in close proximity to refuse. LAWMA has announced enforcement strategies that include the potential arrest and prosecution of both illegal traders and their customers.
