Lagos traffic management and law enforcement

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has intensified enforcement and management strategies to address traffic violations and road safety in Lagos. Initially, LASTMA conducted a crackdown across several areas, including Idumota and Costain, impounding 84 vehicles for violations such as driving against the flow of traffic. During these operations, officials reported resistance from some individuals, which led to the assault of officers and damage to agency vehicles. Following these enforcement actions and a fatal accident on the Coastal Road, authorities transitioned to a 24-hour traffic management strategy. This initiative involves deploying specialized response teams to major interchanges, bridges, and commercial districts to manage real-time traffic, optimize flow, and respond to incidents such as vehicle breakdowns and road crashes. In light of a recent fatal accident on the Coastal Road that resulted in one death and three serious injuries, the Lagos State Government has warned that motorists engaging in excessive speeding and reckless driving will be arrested and prosecuted. Recent data indicates the scale of road safety challenges, with LASTMA reporting 1,409 road traffic crashes and 670 rescues over a nine-month period. Agency spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq noted that operatives perform preliminary assessments, facilitate rescues, and implement traffic diversions to prevent secondary collisions and ensure emergency access. LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki has emphasized the necessity of inter-agency collaboration with to improve overall road safety. To bolster these efforts, Lagos State has focused on professionalizing its workforce. During a ceremony for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency Law Enforcement Training Institute (LETI), 1,800 officers from seven agencies, including LASTMA, completed mandatory in-service training. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Attorney General Lawal Pedro, emphasized that effective enforcement requires “integrity, accountability, and respect for citizens’ rights.” Additionally, following a one-month public sensitization campaign regarding the traffic sector reform law of 2015 and the environmental reform law of 2017, the Lagos State Ambulance Service to improve overall road safety. Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit has announced it will begin arrests and prosecutions of violators.
