Lake Balaton 2026 Swim & Festival Updates

Entities: HungaroMet Observatory · Balatonboglár · Balaton regional organizers · Szamárfül Family Festival · Balaton

Overview

In early July 2026 Hungarian authorities announced a new lake waterway for the 44th Lidl Balaton swim. By late July a detailed programme was released, featuring the V. Kenese ArtFeszt arts festival (July 29‑August 2) and the 5.2 km open‑water swim across Lake Balaton scheduled for 1 August, with registration open until the eve and options for a 2.6 km half‑distance and a stand‑up‑paddle‑board crossing. Boat services on the Balatonboglár–Révfülöp route were adjusted, with some evening cruises cancelled to accommodate the race. A broader schedule of concerts, street‑music festivals, jazz events, wine weeks and family‑friendly activities filled the lake’s surroundings through early August, culminating in the Szamárfül Family Festival in Pécs at month’s end.

On 31 July the organisers confirmed that the 44th Balaton‑átúszás would go ahead on 1 August after two weather‑related postponements. Nearly 11 000 participants from 60 countries, representing 1 190 Hungarian towns, entered the race. Swimmers chose between the classic 5.2 km swim, a 2.6 km half‑distance, or a 5.2 km SUP crossing. The start at 07:00 h was met with extreme heat (air 26‑36 °C, water ~25 °C). Safety was provided by 150 sailboats, three hospital ships, rescue motor‑boats, 60 kayakers and more than a thousand volunteers.

The men's winner, Nagy Nándor, finished in 59 min 20 s, marking the 250,000th finisher in the event’s history. Regular ferry services on the Balatonboglár–Révfülöp line were temporarily altered, with several passenger and sunset cruises cancelled for the day to support the race.
