Lake Garda monitor lizard search continues
Entities: Montichiari · Marco Togni · Calcinato · Task force · Italian local authorities
Overview
On 26 July 2026 a large crocodile monitor (Varanus salvadorii) escaped from a private terrarium near Montichiari and Desenzano del Garda on Italy’s Lake Garda. Authorities imposed an immediate walking ban, published a sighting map and deployed police, municipal guards, forest rangers and drones equipped with thermal cameras.
Mayor Marco Togni inspected the site the next day, extending the restrictions with a ten‑day ban on pedestrian and bicycle traffic along provincial road 668 and nearby fields. A task‑force was formalised on 31 July, tightening access limits and urging residents to report any sightings.
On 31 July the mayor also appealed on social media for anyone who knows the animal’s whereabouts—alive or dead—to place the carcass visibly on a roadside so the matter can be closed. The Italian Society of Veterinarians for Exotic Animals (SIVAE) and the National Association of Italian Veterinarians (ANMVI) pledged expert assistance, recommending specialist veterinarians, baiting, continued use of thermal‑camera drones and strict access restrictions to protect both the public and the lizard.
The search remains ongoing, with the ban in place and aerial and ground patrols continuing.
