Lake sturgeon longevity research in Great Lakes

New research published in the Journal of Fish Biology indicates that lake sturgeon in the Great Lakes region possess a significantly higher longevity than previously estimated. While scientists formerly believed these fish lived for approximately 100 to 150 years, new studies suggest lifespans could reach several centuries.

One study involving Michigan State University and other institutions utilized advanced mathematical modeling to suggest that males could live up to 279 years, while females might reach 427 years. Researchers noted that traditional age-estimation methods, such as counting growth rings in fin spines, often fail as the fish age.

Subsequent findings from the University of Michigan, utilizing 44 years of capture, tagging, and recapture data, further support these extended lifespans. This research suggests some males may reach a median age of 435 years. Because lake sturgeon are among the most endangered species on Earth, scientists emphasize that understanding their true longevity is critical for improving conservation efforts.
