Lake Velence water quality monitoring

Overview

Authorities in Hungary, specifically the National Water Directorate and the Central Transdanubian Water Directorate, have deployed an automated monitoring buoy in Lake Velence to address deteriorating water quality. The measure follows extreme hydrological and climatic conditions, including severe drought and heatwaves, which have caused dropping water levels.

These conditions have resulted in highly concentrated water, increased salinity, higher turbidity, and significant algae blooms, such as picoalgae and high chlorophyll-a concentrations, particularly in the eastern basin.

The buoy, which was relocated from the Maconkai reservoir to the Lake Velence bathing area, conducts measurements every 15 minutes. It tracks parameters including water temperature, oxygen levels, salinity, pH, turbidity, and electrical conductivity. Data is transmitted to a central online database every 30 minutes to allow experts to detect rapid changes and facilitate timely interventions.
