Land corruption and fraud incidents in Kenya
Overview
Legal and criminal actions regarding land-related corruption and fraud have been reported in Kenya.
In one case, the Milimani High Court’s Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Division ordered the forfeiture of assets exceeding Sh426 million belonging to former Principal Land Registrar Felix Mecha Nyakundi, his wife, and two companies. Justice Benjamin Mwikya Musyoki ruled that the defendants could not explain the disparity between their wealth and Nyakundi’s legitimate income. Investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) indicated that Nyakundi used his position to illegally allocate public land to his wife.
Separately, detectives in Trans Nzoia County arrested Philip Ouko Makete for an alleged Sh1.08 million land-leasing scam. Makete is accused of falsely claiming ownership of 30 acres of land in Saboti and marketing it for sugarcane farming before disappearing with the lease fee.
