Land ownership disputes in Puno, Peru

Overview

In the Totorani district of Puno, Peru, a land dispute dating back to 1982 has escalated into active resistance. Approximately 400 to 500 families in the Ciudad de la Humanidad area are facing potential displacement by the Asociación Vida Perú.

Residents claim they have paid for their properties through installment plans but lack formal titles or public deeds. They have accused the association of irregular administration. A recent attempt to execute an eviction, overseen by Judge Janisa Mamani Vargas, was suspended after residents and neighbors used gas cylinders and fuel to barricade themselves and resist the proceedings.
