Large predator management in Poland

Overview

Human-wildlife conflict involving wolves in Poland has seen an increase in reported incidents. In the Włodawa district, wolves have been spotted near residential buildings, roads, and farms, including an attack on a sheepfold in Stare Stulno. These encounters have resulted in financial losses for local residents due to livestock predation.

In response to the management of large predators, Poland is launching Project WATAHA, a 4.7 million euro genetic research initiative. Led by the Chief Inspectorate for Environmental Protection (GIOŚ) in partnership with the Norwegian organization Rovdata, the project aims to monitor populations of wolves, bears, and lynxes using modern genetic methods. Additionally, the State Forests are conducting the “Predatory Border” project, a 1.4 million euro initiative focused on cross-border predator protection between Poland and Slovakia.
