Larissa General Hospital emergency department modernization and Thessaly healthcare upgrades

Following renovations funded by the Recovery Fund, the administration of Larissa General Hospital addressed concerns from EKAB workers regarding ambulance accessibility. Workers had suggested that the entrance height on Georgiadou Street might prevent modern, high-clearance mobile units from entering the new Emergency Department (ED). Hospital management clarified that the usable entrance height remains at 2.55 meters and noted that inspections were conducted to ensure vehicle access. Subsequently, Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis inaugurated the new Emergency Departments, describing them as some of the best in the country. The upgrades are part of a broader effort to modernize the regional healthcare system in Thessaly, involving collaborations between the Ministry of Health, the Municipality of Larissa, and the Thessaly Region to improve over 200 health services. During a two-day tour of the Thessaly region, Minister Georgiadis expanded on these regional improvements. In addition to the renovated ED at Larissa General Hospital, the tour included the inauguration of a renovated Pediatric Clinic and a Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit at the University Hospital. The Minister also announced the upcoming procurement of a new linear accelerator for radiotherapy within one year. Other regional upgrades included a renovated ED at Achillopouleio Hospital in Volos, a modernized Health Center in Tyrnavos, and a new ED at the General Hospital in Trikala, which features new spaces for Fast Track and Shock Rooms. While visiting Volos, the Minister faced protests from trade unionists regarding staffing shortages, to which he responded by highlighting increases in hospital budgets and staff numbers.
