Latin America Missing Persons Identification

In early August 2026, forensic teams in Veracruz, Mexico, reported that fingerprint restoration and matching against the national electoral database had enabled the identification of several missing relatives for families of the Colectivo Solecito. The Centro de Identificación Humana increased its annual case resolution from a handful to up to fifteen, bringing the total identified to 79.

A few days later, Belize’s National Forensic Science Service announced a DNA‑based project to identify about twenty sets of skeletal remains recovered since 1998. The initiative combines laboratory testing, archival research and a public outreach campaign, already reuniting one family and expecting results for three more cases soon.

Together, the two efforts illustrate a regional expansion of forensic capacity, employing both fingerprint and DNA technologies to address backlogs of missing‑person cases and to provide closure for affected families across Latin America.
