Latin American river pollution protests

Overview

In late July 2026, residents of the Quinara parish in Loja province, Ecuador, raised fresh demands for urgent action after a stone‑quarry operation had been discharging sediments and waste into the Piscobamba River for more than two decades. The contamination rendered the river unsafe for irrigation, bathing and tourism, threatening local agriculture and emerging tourism income. Community leaders called for environmental inspections and an end to the mining‑related discharge, noting that earlier complaints to national and local authorities had produced no concrete response.

A few days later, a similar dispute surfaced in Guatemala, where the Poqomam Maya community of Santa Cruz Chinautla highlighted ongoing pollution of the Chinautla, Tzaljá and Las Vacas rivers. Despite a 2025 court order directing the government to address the contamination, officials had only held technical meetings while five sand‑mining sites continued operating with expired licences. The community reported persistent river pollution, respiratory illness and damage to traditional pottery, underscoring the link between environmental degradation and indigenous rights.

Both cases illustrate a pattern across Latin America of local communities confronting long‑standing mining‑related river pollution, confronting limited governmental response, and seeking legal or administrative remedies to protect livelihoods and health.
