Latvia sanctions against Russia and Belarus

Overview

Latvia has implemented a series of restrictive measures against Russia and Belarus aimed at protecting national security and reducing the export revenues of these nations.

In late August 2026, the Latvian government announced an import ban on various goods effective September 1. This ban includes printed materials, clothing, textiles, footwear, toys, and sporting equipment. The measure also prohibits the import of these items into EU and NATO member Baltic states even if they are sourced via third countries.

Following these trade restrictions, the Latvian Ministry of Transport proposed a ban on all regular and irregular international bus services to Russia and Belarus, as well as transit through Latvian territory, intended to take effect in 2027. Officials noted that a unilateral ban might create loopholes via neighboring Estonia and Lithuania, prompting calls for a coordinated approach at the Baltic and European Union levels.
