Following a technical outage that forced the Pāternieki‑Grigorowszczina checkpoint to close on 31 July 2026, Latvia intensified its response to a surge of illegal crossings from Belarus. Border‑guard chief Guntis Pujāts called for additional military support, daily attempts peaked at 111 in mid‑July, and the year‑to‑date total exceeded 8,000. President Edgars Rinkēvičs introduced a rapid‑response mechanism, expanded fencing and harsher penalties, while NATO allies reinforced eastern municipalities. On 1 August the Interior Ministry proposed permanently halting the crossing; the next day the checkpoint was temporarily shut for all traffic, prompting travel warnings from Latvia and Romania. On 5 August the checkpoint reopened after the information‑system failure was resolved. The State Border Guard announced that reservations could again be made through the online system, allowing two‑way traffic to resume. 11 August, Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs said the government had considered suspending the crossing to curb illegal migration but kept it open, emphasizing security as the priority. The crossing remains the sole road link between Latvia and Belarus and a key conduit for EU trade with China and Central Asia. Belarus warned of possible retaliatory measures, while the reopening occurs ahead of Latvia’s parliamentary elections in October, keeping migration pressure a salient political issue. To further secure the frontier, Prime Minister Kulbergs launched ‘Operation Vilkatis’, a coordinated security initiative involving the State Border Guard, State Police, and National Armed Forces. The operation utilizes drones, helicopters, and increased roadside inspections to counter what the government describes as hybrid warfare orchestrated by Russia and Belarus. On 27 August, State Border Guard chief Guntis Pujāts called for the continuation of ‘Operation Vilkatis’, noting that intensified efforts have already led to a decrease in violators and the apprehension of two smugglers. However, he warned that provocations might increase in the short term due to the upcoming elections.
