Latvian Academy of Sciences investigation
Overview
The Latvian State Revenue Service (VID) launched an investigation into the asset declarations of Ivars Kalviņš, President of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (LZA), and Baiba Rivža, the academy’s General Secretary. The probe centers on allegations that both officials failed to disclose roles on the advisory board of Zoar Limited, a pharmaceutical company registered in the Cayman Islands and directed by Kanan Vishvanat.
Baiba Rivža has denied holding any official position or contractual relationship with Zoar Limited. While the names of both Kalviņš and Rivža previously appeared on the company’s website in a consultative advisory board list, the information has since been removed. Kanan Vishvanat stated the inclusion was a “gesture of respect” following an event in Riga and suggested the website layout may have created a “misleading impression.” The company maintains that neither official has received compensation or held contractual ties with the firm.
