Latvian inflation trends and pension indexation

Latvia is managing economic shifts related to inflation and consumer prices. While annual inflation dropped to 2.6% in July due to seasonal factors and VAT reductions on certain food items, economists warn that warned this decline may might be temporary. Pēteris Strautiņš, chief economist at Luminor, predicts predicted inflation could reach approximately 3% in August and exceed 4% by the end of the year, year-end, driven by rising costs in housing, utilities, and services. By August 2026, the annual inflation rate rose to 3.2%, up from 2.6% in July. While food and non-alcoholic beverage prices decreased by 1.2% during the month—including a 12.8% drop in potato prices—service prices saw a significant increase of 5.9%. Key drivers for the monthly rise included transport, housing, water, and energy. Strautiņš noted that while summer provided relief, rising fuel costs and heating tariffs, which increased by 1.2% in August, were expected to impact prices moving into autumn. In response to these economic conditions, the government has announced a pension indexation scheduled for October 1. This Welfare Minister Reinis Uzulnieks stated the adjustment will affect approximately 97% of pensioners, with pensioners. For pensions not exceeding 1,589 euros, increases ranging will range from 4.24% to 5.22% based on the recipient's recipient’s length of insurance. The indexation is calculated using the 12-month consumer price index Specific tiers include 4.24% for up to 29 years of service, rising to 5.22% for those with 45 years or more. Certain groups, such as persons with first-group disabilities and real growth in insurance contribution salaries. Chernobyl accident liquidators, will receive full indexation.
