The Lazio region has implemented several initiatives aimed at economic development through tourism and maritime industries. On October 16, the Lazio Regional Council launched the ‘In Lazio-be excellence. Lazio tourism market’ to promote the cultural and territorial assets of its 378 municipalities. President Antonello Aurigemma noted that while Rome attracts significant tourism, increasing the average length of stay could provide a substantial economic boost to the region. Following this, the Blue Planet Economy Expoforum was held in Rome from October 21 to 24. Supported by regional authorities, the forum focused on the maritime economy, highlighting that over 38,000 businesses in the Blue Economy contribute a 7% value added to the regional economy. The event addressed sustainable development, technological innovation, and the necessity of ‘Blue Finance’ to support small and medium-sized enterprises in sectors such as logistics, energy, and tourism. During the forum, Vice President Roberta Angelilli highlighted the region’s 383 kilometers of coastline. Discussions on ‘Blue Finance’ included various funding mechanisms such as bank credit, nautical leasing, and ESG-related incentives. Additionally, the ‘Dal Green al Blue’ debate focused on a strategic transition toward a sustainable maritime economy, specifically targeting the ports of Civitavecchia, Fiumicino, and Gaeta. Key maritime priorities include decarbonizing port logistics through the electrification of quays at Civitavecchia, expected by late 2027, and the development of a ‘Hydrogen Valley’. Other initiatives involve improving rail connections to docks, promoting electric propulsion for boating, and implementing coastal environmental protections. Officials emphasized that success depends on synergy between public and private sectors and professional training to create new maritime employment.
