The Lazio Region has extended the deadline for launching local public transport (TPL) network units to December 31, 2026. This extension, introduced via an amendment to the 2026 budget variation proposal, responds to requests from local areas for more time to organize the reorganization. The delay is intended to allow for continued discussions between the Region, Astral, and various municipalities to address organizational issues and identified criticalities. To facilitate the transition of services, the region announced that all Metrebus Lazio subscriptions, including standard and subsidized versions, will remain valid until December 31, 2026, on routes transitioning from Cotral to the new Unità di Rete (UdR) coordinated by Astral. This measure aims to prevent service interruptions or economic changes for passengers, though Metrebus Lazio Student subscriptions are excluded as Cotral will continue managing school services for the full year. Additionally, the region has introduced free regional bus travel for residents over 70, integrated with the new “Metrebus Plus” tariff system. In Civitavecchia, the municipality opted against a subcontracting model due to economic instability, instead transitioning to a new manager on October 31. Following negotiations with Astral, the administration secured commitments to maintain current city lines, increase services to Campo dell’Oro, establish a link to the Carlo Chenis oncology center, and implement social clauses to protect employees. As the reorganization progresses, service disruptions have emerged. In Pomezia, Mayor Veronica Felici has met with Astral and the provider Troiani to demand the restoration of service levels that existed prior to the June 30 management transition from the municipality to the Lazio Region, addressing citizen dissatisfaction regarding frequency and connectivity.
