Lebanese media legislative developments
Overview
In late August 2026, the Lebanese Press Syndicate and the Lebanese Editors Syndicate issued a joint statement criticizing a newly passed media law. Syndicate leaders Aouni Kaaki and Joseph Chafifi expressed concern that the legislation was approved without sufficient debate and could be used to “tame the press,” restrict media freedoms, and enable the imprisonment of journalists through excessive fines.
By late September, legislative activity regarding media regulation continued through the Media and Telecommunications Committee. Chaired by MP Ibrahim al-Mousawi, the committee approved a draft law requiring state-owned institutions to allocate at least 5% of their advertising budgets to official state media to alleviate financial distress in public broadcasting. During these proceedings, officials also addressed the quality of media discourse, noting concerns regarding offensive language and its impact on national culture.
