Lebanese political and diplomatic developments

In Lebanon, efforts regarding national unity and diplomatic relations have unfolded through both domestic meetings and international diplomacy.

Domestically, Ali Fadlallah met with a Hezbollah delegation to discuss memorial services for former leaders Hassan Nasrallah and Hashem Safieddine. Fadlallah characterized the loss of these figures as a “significant blow to the nation” and advocated for preserving national unity. He also met with the National Association for Dialogue to emphasize the need for sincere dialogue to bridge religious and political divides while cautioning against sectarianism.

On the international stage, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Foreign Minister Youssef Raji met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at the United Nations General Assembly. Salam expressed a desire for a state-to-state relationship based on “mutual respect for sovereignty, independence, and non-interference in internal affairs,” noting that Lebanon does not wish to be a “theater for regional conflicts.” He also requested that Tehran appoint a new ambassador to Lebanon. Foreign Minister Raji indicated that discussions focused on the conditions required to improve bilateral relations.
