Lee Chean Chung has resigned as the Member of Parliament for Petaling Jaya following a three-year suspension from the People’s Justice Party (PKR). Lee characterized his resignation as unconditional and criticized the party for suspending him without a hearing or explanation. He further alleged that party representatives had blocked his access to RM3 million in constituency development funds. In response to the resignation, PKR Deputy Secretary-General Bryan Ng Yih Miin criticized Lee, alleging he failed to utilize party platforms and frequently skipped crucial government and party meetings. PKR President Anwar Ibrahim also described Lee as an inactive member. Following Lee’s formal resignation to Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul on October 2, Deputy Speaker Datuk Ramli Md Nor informed the Dewan Rakyat that the Petaling Jaya parliamentary seat is now vacant. Lee’s departure ends an 18-year association with PKR, which he claims suspended him due to his outspokenness on public issues. Lee has since applied to join officially joined Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama). (Bersama), led by Rafizi Ramli. The party has welcomed him as a prospective leader, stating he will intends for Lee to serve among its interim leaders and assist in campaign preparations for the upcoming Melaka state election, with a focus on strengthening party machinery in specifically targeting Chinese-majority areas. This defection contributes to what is being described as internal instability within PKR, following the departures of other figures such as Wong Chen and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Mohd Razlan Rafii has called on the Pakatan Harapan-led government to address these resignations, suggesting they signal a loss of confidence in party leadership and the Prime Minister. Razlan noted that the former MPs have planned a nationwide tour to highlight alleged governance failures and internal party issues.
