Historical accounts detail the life and legacy of Saint Francis of Assisi, including his spiritual relationships and cultural impact. Records highlight his close bond with Jacopa de’ Settesoli, a Roman noblewoman whom he referred to as ‘Frate Jacopa’ to honor her spiritual strength. Their connection is preserved through traditions such as the consumption of mostaccioli, a sweet the Saint reportedly requested as he lay dying in 1226. Francis’s life was marked by a transition from a wealthy background to a life of poverty and service, leading to the founding of the Order of Friars Minor. His historical contributions include composing the ‘Canticle of the Creatures’, engaging in dialogue with Sultan al-Malik al-Kamil, and establishing the Nativity scene tradition. In October 2026, Assisi and the wider Italian community commemorated the 800th anniversary of the saint’s death. Following a 2025 law, October 4 was reinstated as a national holiday in Italy. Central celebrations in Assisi drew thousands of pilgrims and international diplomats, featuring a Mass presided over by Cardinal Matteo Zuppi and an address by President Sergio Mattarella. During his address, Mattarella emphasized the saint’s message of peace, stating that killing in the name of God is a ‘grave error’. Global observances included a speech by Pope Leo XIV in Rome, where he urged the faithful to mend the ‘cracks of discord’ in the world. Commemorations extended globally, including symbolic acts of reconciliation in Pakistan, such as the release of white doves. Regional festivities also occurred in San Francisco, Argentina, and Montescaglioso, Italy, alongside commemorative stamp issuances by Poste Italiane. Other local observances included a crossbow competition in Pisa, a message of solidarity from Bishop Orazio Francesco Piazza in Viterbo, and reflections on interreligious dialogue and environmental stewardship by the Archbishop of Ferrara-Comacchio.
