Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, a French Carmelite nun and mystic, is recognized for her spiritual philosophy known as the ‘little way,’ which emphasizes finding holiness through small, everyday acts performed with love. Born in Alençon in 1873, she entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux in 1888. 1888 after seeking permission from Pope Leo XIII. Despite her life being cut short by tuberculosis at age 24, her posthumous writings, such as ‘Story of a Soul,’ have maintained a significant impact on believers. She was beatified in 1923 and canonized in 1925. Thérèse is a patron saint of missionaries and, alongside Joan of Arc, a patron saint of France. She was also named a Doctor of the Church, a title noted by Pope John Paul II for her ‘science of love.’ In October 2026, religious observances and liturgical commemorations are scheduled in France to honor her feast day on October 3. Within the Diocese of Nîmes, a series of masses and services are organized throughout the month in locations such as La Grand’ Combe, Ponteils, Les Salles du Gardon, and Génolhac. These commemorations include services held at local parishes, hospitals, and retirement homes.
