Legal actions against Brazilian police officers

Recent reports highlight legal proceedings against Brazilian military police officers following fatal and non-fatal shootings.

In Salvador, Bahia, police soldier Valdilene Nonato Santos França was taken into temporary custody after being identified via body-camera footage and forensic analysis as the individual who killed 33-year-old merchant Leonardo Gil Lima, known as Léo Lanches, on July 23. The incident occurred during a patrol in the São Cristóvão neighbourhood, where witnesses reported no exchange of fire. Bahia Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues has called for a rigorous investigation into the matter.

Separately, in Santos, three officers—Daniel Pereira Noda, Carlos Vinicius Batista Bruno, and Thiago Freitas da Silva—are set to face a jury trial for the attempted murder of motorcycle taxi driver Evandro Alves da Silva. The prosecution alleges the officers shot the unarmed victim during ‘Operação Escudo’ in August 2023. Body camera footage and forensic analysis have become central to the case, reportedly contradicting claims that the victim was armed and suggesting potential tampering with the crime scene.
