Authorities in Mérida, Yucatán, have conducted high-profile operations involving businessmen facing criminal allegations. In one instance, federal authorities arrested Justo Aurelio Rivera Parrazales, a businessman suspected of staging his own death during a 2025 armed attack in Querétaro to evade law enforcement. A joint operation by the Mexican Navy, the Ministry of Security and Civil Protection, and the Attorney General’s Office resulted in the seizure of assets exceeding 145 million pesos, including luxury vehicles and firearms. Investigations suggest Rivera Parrazales acted as a financial operator for criminal organizations and used government contracts to build wealth. Separately, Arturo Millet Reyes, a businessman facing fraud and abuse of trust charges, escaped from a private clinic in Mérida while under police custody. Millet Reyes had been transferred to the clinic for medical attention following a judicial hearing regarding unpaid damages. A While a warrant for his re-arrest has been was issued as he remains following his escape, his legal team has since filed an injunction (amparo) to block the warrant. They are also appealing a fugitive. judicial order requiring him to pay $2.8 million USD through a trust to cover damages. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of the escape to determine if there was negligence or omission by the State Investigation Police (PEI) or the Yucatán Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) officers responsible for his security. His location remains unconfirmed.
