Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is involved in legal and protective measures regarding her public image and reputation. In a defamation trial in Milan, Meloni is scheduled to testify as a civil party in early 2027. The case involves entrepreneur Fabrizio Corona and Luca Arnau, director of ‘Dillingernews’, who face accusations of aggravated defamation for spreading false information about an alleged relationship between Meloni and Deputy Manlio Messina in 2023. The hearing was postponed from late 2026 due to a collective strike by defense lawyers and the Prime Minister’s institutional schedule. Separately, Meloni has applied to register her voice as a trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). This measure, which includes a four-second recording of her saying ‘Io sono Giorgia Meloni’, aims to combat deepfakes and unauthorized AI-generated voice cloning. The application, currently under examination, follows previous instances where Meloni was the target of manipulated imagery, including deepfake pornographic images that led to civil legal action. Managed by the Rome-based law firm MpmLegal, the application covers several service categories, including downloadable multimedia content, cultural activities, and the organization of political events. If approved, the trademark would provide legal grounds to prevent the use of synthesized audio across all 27 EU member states for unauthorized commercial, political, or cultural purposes. Meloni joins other public figures, such as singer Giusy Ferreri and voice actor Luca Ward, who have previously sought similar protections. Experts note that while a trademark may not physically prevent the creation of deepfakes, it provides a binding legal tool to demand the removal of unauthorized content from social media and websites.
