Legal crackdown on Tehran concert organizers and performers

Following a concert held in early 2025 at the Roo-be-Roo cultural complex in Tehran, Iranian authorities have issued several prison sentences related to the event. Singer Hiwa Seyfizade was sentenced to four years in prison on charges of ‘inciting corruption and prostitution.’ Seyfizade has questioned the validity of these charges, asking, ‘How can the reading of Saadi’s poetry or an Iranian song incite corruption and prostitution?’

In addition to the singer, the organizers of the event have also received significant prison terms. Manager Hooman Memarpanehi was sentenced to 10 years, and public relations manager Gazal Nahani received seven years, both on charges of ‘spreading corruption and debauchery through organizing a concert.’

While there are conflicting reports regarding whether the performance had the necessary permits, the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance stated the concert lacked permission. In response to the rulings, public relations and communications professionals have issued a statement calling for a judicial review, expressing concern that such legal actions threaten professional security and the freedom to operate within the cultural and communications sectors.
