Environmental associations, including Générations Futures, Notre Affaire à Tous, and ClientEarth, have initiated legal pressure against the French appliance group Seb regarding the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in its Tefal brand cookware. Initially, these groups issued a formal notice demanding that Seb fulfill its legal duty of vigilance by identifying risks and planning a phase-out of these ‘forever chemicals.’ The notice required compliance within three months to avoid potential legal action. The associations have characterized the company’s continued use of PFAS in non-stick cookware as ‘outdated and insufficient,’ alleging a failure to meet legal obligations under French corporate responsibility laws. The situation escalated as legal proceedings were brought before the Grenoble Administrative Court. The associations are seeking an urgent injunction to block emissions from the Tefal plant located in Rumilly, Haute-Savoie, amid concerns from local groups like Agir Ensemble pour Rumilly et l’Albanais regarding atmospheric emissions. Seb Group has responded by defending the safety of its products, specifically distinguishing the use of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)—which it describes as a ‘large and chemically inert polymer’—from smaller, bioaccumulative PFAS molecules like PFOA, which the company says it abandoned in 2012. The company stated it will respond to the matter within the legal framework.
