Google sued; French AI Overviews raise press concerns

Overview

In June 2026 Google sued a Chinese cyber‑crime group for misusing its Gemini AI, while cooperating with U.S. law‑enforcement agencies.

In July 2026 a coalition of major publishers—including Hachette Book Group, Cengage Learning, Elsevier—joined author Scott Turow and the author‑rights group S.C.R.I.B.E. in filing a federal class‑action suit in the Southern District of New York. The complaint alleges that Google copied millions of copyrighted books, scholarly articles and other works supplied to Google Books, Play Books and Scholar, then used them without permission to train Gemini, also scraping pirate and pay‑walled sites and stripping metadata. Plaintiffs seek a permanent injunction, damages and the destruction of any unauthorized training copies.

On 22 July 2026 Google launched “AI Overviews” (also called AI Mode) in France, inserting Gemini‑generated summaries above traditional search results. Google announced compensation for roughly 450 French media outlets when excerpts appear in the summaries and noted that users can disable the feature via a Chrome setting. French publishers, represented by the Alliance of the Press of General Information (APIG), warned that the zero‑click format could cut click‑through rates by 25‑30 % and shrink overall traffic from Google Search by up to 43 % by the end of 2026. The rollout has intensified the litigation, which now also targets Google’s French operations.

On 25 July 2026 the same group of publishers filed an additional lawsuit extending the claim to French activities, underscoring concerns that AI Overviews could further erode press neighboring rights while the litigation seeks to curb what they view as unlawful use of copyrighted material for AI training.
