Recent developments in Romania involve separate criminal investigations into different individuals. In Ploiești, Alexandru Constandachi, known as ‘Justițiarul de Berceni’, and George Daniel Bozieru were detained for 24 hours following allegations of assault and unlawful deprivation of liberty. The case stems from an August 2026 incident where Constandachi claimed to have intercepted a suspected rapist; however, the suspect filed a counter-complaint alleging he was beaten and forcibly removed from a vehicle. Investigators reportedly found a stun gun and an airsoft weapon during searches, and prosecutors have requested 30 days of preventive arrest. Police are also continuing a separate inquiry into the original rape allegation involving the 25-year-old man. In Iași, Alexandru Toader, a lecturer at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University and a public notary, was detained following allegations of sexual assault and harassment. Two former students accused him of exchanging sexual advances for academic favors. While prosecutors seek his preventive arrest, former Minister of Justice Tudorel Toader has defended his son, characterizing the allegations as a fabrication. On October 24, 2026, the Iași Court of Appeal placed Toader in preventive detention for 30 days. He faces investigation for continuous rape, sexual aggression, attempted sexual aggression, and the use of a professional position for sexual purposes. Prosecutors allege Toader exploited his academic authority to pressure students into sexual acts in exchange for passing exams. One student reported being approached after failing exams and alleging sexual relations occurred in both his university and notary offices. Tudorel Toader maintains the allegations are a “fabricated attack” orchestrated by a lawyer with a criminal record.
