Activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam are facing legal proceedings in the Delhi High Court regarding bail applications related to the February 2020 northeast Delhi riots. Both individuals are charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), with authorities alleging they were the “masterminds” of the violence. Delhi Police has opposed the bail pleas, arguing that the petitions are “illegal” and intended to “mislead” the court. The prosecution has contended that the activists are attempting to use unrelated Supreme Court judgments to claim changed circumstances, noting that previous conditions for renewed bail pleas have not yet been met. In a recent development, a Delhi court granted interim bail to Sharjeel Imam from October 4 to October 10, allowing him to attend his cousins’ wedding ceremonies in Delhi and Bihar. The Delhi High Court has scheduled a hearing for September 30 to address these pleas. The proceedings were the regular bail pleas of both Imam and Khalid. This hearing, which addresses challenges to earlier trial court decisions that denied their bail, was previously adjourned to allow for the availability of the Additional Solicitor General.
