Legal developments in Greece involve two distinct judicial processes. In Thessaloniki, a trial has commenced at the Mixed Jury Court regarding a fatal road accident in Chalkidiki that occurred in April 2025. The case involves the deaths of a 33-year-old man and police officer Maria Zafeiri. Defendants face charges including intentional homicide and negligent homicide. Separately, the Greek Parliament has finalized the composition of a Special Court to prosecute former Deputy Minister Christos Triantopoulos. The court, consisting of members from the Supreme Court and the Council of State, will address charges of breach of duty related to the Tempi train collision. Following a lottery conducted by Parliament, the Special Court is now composed of 13 regular members and 6 substitute members from the Areios Pagos and the Council of State, alongside a prosecutor and a substitute prosecutor. The proceedings concern allegations of breach of duty regarding the handling of the Tempi railway collision scene in February 2023, specifically the alteration of the site before all victims were collected. In addition to Triantopoulos, four other officials have been referred to the court as accomplices: former Thessaly Regional Governor Kostas Agorastos, former General Secretary of Civil Protection Vasilis Papageorgiou, Agapios Charakopoulos (head of the Hellenic Police at the scene), and Evangelos Falaras (head of the Fire Service). Once the court president receives the official minutes from Parliament, a trial date must be set within 40 to 60 days.
