Legal proceedings in Juan Antonio López murder case

Overview

Following the September 14, 2024, murder of environmentalist and municipal councilman Juan Antonio López in Tocoa, Colón, the Honduran Public Ministry formalized accusations against former Tocoa mayor Adán Fúnez Martínez. Fúnez Martínez and others face charges of murder and criminal association.

Investigations indicated that several individuals were involved in the attack, which occurred as López was leaving a religious activity. Evidence suggested that certain accomplices coordinated the delivery of a motorcycle used in the crime and conducted surveillance on the victim.

In October 2026, a Honduran court ordered an oral and public trial for Fúnez Martínez, Juan Ángel Ramos Gallegos, and Héctor Eduardo Méndez, identifying them as the alleged intellectual authors of the murder. The trial is scheduled to take place in 2027 at the National Court of Sentencing with Jurisdiction in Matters of Organized Crime, Environment, and Corruption in Tegucigalpa.
