Legal proceedings involving Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB

The legal situation surrounding Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has involved both significant financial claims against the Nigerian government and developments regarding his criminal sentencing.

IPOB has alleged that the Nigerian government, security agencies, and regional governors have failed to pay ₦9.5 billion in court-ordered damages. These claims stem from multiple rulings, including a 2022 Abia State High Court decision, a 2022 Federal High Court judgment regarding his detention, and a 2023 Enugu State High Court order declaring the proscription of IPOB unconstitutional. The group also cited a 2025 Kenya High Court decision regarding his alleged abduction.

In a separate legal development, the Nigerian government withdrew its cross-appeal seeking a mandatory death penalty for Kanu. This follows a Federal High Court ruling by Justice James Omotosho, who rejected the prosecution’s request for capital punishment and instead sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment, noting international trends against the death penalty.
