Comedian Danilo Gentili has faced multiple legal rulings in Brazil regarding offensive social media content. In August 2026, a São Paulo court ordered Gentili to pay R$ 10,000 in moral damages to Father Júlio Lancellotti. The judge ruled that Gentili exceeded the limits of satire by using artificial intelligence to create sexually explicit montages and disseminating false information intended to attack the priest’s character. Separately, Brazil’s Superior Tribunal de Justiça (STJ) upheld a ruling requiring Gentili to pay R$ 20,000 in damages to Federal Deputy Sâmia Bomfim. This case involved fatphobic insults directed at Bomfim during her time as a São Paulo city councilwoman. The STJ rejected defense arguments regarding the statute of limitations, ruling that the period for seeking reparation begins anew with each subsequent unauthorized publication of illicit content. In a unanimous decision led by Minister Antonio Carlos Ferreira, the STJ characterized the ongoing availability of the offensive posts as a “violação continuada” (continued violation). Beyond the monetary damages, the court ordered Gentili to remove the posts from the X platform. Failure to comply with this removal may result in a daily fine of R$ 1,000, capped at R$ 30,000. The court determined that the comments constituted personal attacks rather than protected political criticism.
