The Aceh Oil and Gas Management Agency (BPMA) and the Oil and Gas Institute (LEMIGAS) initiated technical crude assay testing on community-operated wells in regions including Bireuen, North Aceh, East Aceh, and Pangkalan Susu. This testing evaluates parameters such as API gravity, sulfur content, and viscosity to transition management from volume-based metrics to technical and economic value. The data is intended to provide a technical foundation for oil pricing proposals to the Indonesian Crude Price (ICP) Team. Following these technical efforts, the Indonesian government moved to legalize community-managed oil wells in Aceh to increase national oil lifting. Under this scheme, PT Pertamina (Persero) and other contractors like Medco and PT Pema Global Energy will partner with local cooperatives. The government aims to provide legal certainty for operators, with the potential to contribute significantly to national production if traditional wells are integrated into the formal economy. In a recent policy implementation, Coordinating Minister for Downstreaming and Energy Transition, Bahlil Lahadalia, legalized approximately 43,000 community-managed oil wells across Sumatra, Java, and Aceh. Under this official framework, Pertamina will purchase oil produced from these wells at 80 percent of the Indonesian Crude Price (ICP). With each community well estimated to produce between 4 to 5 barrels per day, the initiative is designed to bolster national energy security and increase total oil lifting.
