The 34th edition of the Legambiente ‘Puliamo il Mondo’ campaign, the Italian component of the international ‘Clean up the World’ initiative, continues to engage volunteers, schools, and local administrations in cleaning streets, parks, beaches, and rivers across Italy. In Tuscany, nearly 100 initiatives are scheduled, with central activities occurring on September 18, 19, and 20. This year’s campaign emphasizes the environmental impact of cigarette butts, which have been identified as widespread pollutants in coastal areas and urban parks. Monitoring efforts in several Tuscan parks have already cataloged thousands of pieces of waste. Regional efforts have expanded to include educational and urban regeneration projects. In Montanaro, fifth-grade students from the Sandro Pertini and Figlie di Carità primary schools participated in cleaning public spaces to learn the importance of environmental stewardship. In Avellino, the initiative was held in the Borgo Ferrovia district as part of the European Week of Sustainable Mobility. This event focused on neighborhood regeneration and included advocacy for the rapid restoration of the Avellino railway line to enhance regional sustainable mobility. Other notable activities include waste collection in the Monti Sicani region, where volunteers recovered over 2,500 kilograms of glass and plastic from fire-affected areas, and cleanup efforts at Parco dell’Acqua in Cormano. Recent activities coinciding with World Cleanup Day have seen widespread volunteer action. In urban centers such as Campobasso, Bari, and Padova, groups have collected litter ranging from cigarette butts and plastics to furniture and electronics, including a specific focus on small electronic waste (RAEE) in Campobasso. Coastal efforts have expanded to include beach cleanups in Catanzaro, Sorrento, and Stalettì, as well as marine waste collection via kayaks and SUPs in the Portofino Marine Protected Area. On Lake Garda, the Gardaland Sea Life team participated in a global 24-hour cleanup effort.
